Common Maintenance Issues with Preserved Reindeer Moss – and How to Solve Them

Preserved reindeer moss (Cladonia stellaris) has become a favourite in interior design, moss art, and commercial spaces – and for good reason. It needs no watering, no sunlight, and stays naturally soft and plush for years. Thanks to our glycerin-based preservation process, it is no longer a living plant, so it won’t grow or rot. Under proper conditions, preserved reindeer moss can easily last 8 to 10 years or more.

However, even though it is extremely low-maintenance, it can still run into trouble if placed in the wrong environment or handled incorrectly. Below are the most common issues we see – and practical steps to avoid or fix them.

1. Incorrect Humidity – Dry & Brittle or Sticky & Mouldy

Symptoms:

· When the air is too dry, the moss can become stiff, crisp, and prone to crumbling.

· When humidity is too high, the moss may feel sticky and eventually develop mould.

Solutions:

· Keep proper indoor humidity. If ambient humidity is high, good air ventilation is required.

· During winter heating, the moss may temporarily stiffen – this is normal. It will soften again when humidity returns to normal.

· Multiple anti-mold treatments are applied during our production to preserved moldy problems.

2. Too Much Light – Colour Fading

Symptoms:

· Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or strong artificial light will fade the dyed colours.

· UV rays break down the pigments, turning the moss pale, yellowish, or even brownish.

Solutions:

· Position the moss away from windows, skylights, and strong light sources.

· Keep it away from radiators, fireplaces, and other heat sources.

· Remember: preserved moss does not need any light at all.

3. Water or Liquid Sprays – Dye Bleeding & Structural Damage

Symptoms:

· Water can leach out the dyes, causing uneven colouration or staining nearby surfaces.

· Moisture breaks down the glycerin preservation layer, making the moss sticky, mushy, or even disintegrated.

· Perfume, air fresheners, or cleaning sprays can also damage the preservative and leave lingering odours.

Solutions:

· Never water, mist, or soak preserved reindeer moss.

· Avoid placing it near humidifiers, sinks, or anywhere it might get splashed.

· If it does get wet by accident, gently dab it dry with a clean cloth immediately.

4. Dust Accumulation – Cleaning the Right Way

Symptoms:

· Although preserved moss doesn’t attract much dust, a fine layer can still settle on the surface over time.

Cleaning method:

· Use a hairdryer on the cold or cool setting, held about 30 cm (12 inches) away, to blow off dust gently.

· Alternatively, use a soft-bristled brush to sweep the surface lightly.

· Once a month or once a quarter is usually enough – no need for frequent cleaning.

5. Frequent Touching – Physical Damage

Symptoms:

· Reindeer moss is delicate. Repeated touching or pressing can break its structure, causing pieces to fall off.

· Natural oils from your hands can also accelerate ageing and discolouration.

Solutions:

· Treat it as a visual display – admire, but don’t handle it unnecessarily.

· When moving or installing, handle it with extra care and minimal pressure.

6. Initial Natural Odour

Symptoms:

· Newly installed preserved moss may emit a faint earthy or grassy smell for the first week or two.

Solutions:

· This is completely normal and a result of the preservation process. The scent will dissipate on its own – no action is required.
